How your file shrinks toward a 200KB limit
Start by checking what makes your PDF large. A scan stores its words as page images, while a PDF exported with a text layer also contains compact text objects. This tool re-encodes supported embedded images toward a 200KB target using JPEG quality and resolution adjustments. The existing text objects and page positions remain. After processing, use both checks: read the actual output size and open the document to inspect the images. If it is still too large, the result explains whether images were skipped or the available attempts ended.
Read the result before trying again
- An unchanged result has several possible causes. The PDF may already meet the target, or encryption may prevent processing. An over-limit PDF with no supported images may receive only document-level metadata cleanup.
- The image decoder cannot handle every PDF image object. JPEG 2000, indexed-colour, CMYK and explicit-mask images may be left in place; transparent images that are re-encoded get a white background.
- Check two different kinds of text. Existing text and vector objects are retained, while words captured inside scans are compressed as images and may lose sharpness. No automatic legibility assessment is performed.
- A rebuilt PDF has different bytes, so existing digital signatures become invalid. Use the original when its signature must remain verifiable.
Questions about compressing a PDF to 200KB
What does the 200KB result actually tell me?
It reports the generated file’s size against a target of 204,800 bytes. It does not certify readability or acceptance by another website. Processing stays in your browser, with one document up to 60 MB at a time.
What happens if my PDF still exceeds 200KB after processing?
There is a fixed budget for trying quality and image-resolution settings. When those attempts finish above 200KB, the displayed size is the result produced, not a promise that no other method could reduce it further. Check for skipped images, then consider a larger allowance or a simpler source document if your destination permits it.
Why did my file size not change at all?
A file already within the target is returned unchanged. Encrypted PDFs are also left alone. A larger PDF with no supported images may still be rewritten for light document-level metadata cleanup, so it is not guaranteed to remain byte-identical.
Does repeating compression always make the file smaller?
No. Reprocessing an already compressed image can discard more detail without meeting the target. Keep the original, compare the result, and change the target only when you have a reason to try again. This tool does not batch several PDFs into one run.
