How this compresses a GIF to a target size
The GIF compressor tests palettes from 2 to 256 colours and keeps the highest tested count that fits your target. Re-encoding also uses a fixed lossy setting. If the palette search misses the limit, it tries smaller frame dimensions, followed by keeping every second or third frame. A file already within the target is returned unchanged. The result shows which adjustments ran.
Where the GIF compressor falls short
- Cutting the colour palette is a lossy step. Gradients and photographic detail show visible banding as the colour count drops, which is the trade-off required to hit aggressive KB targets.
- Presets like 256KB or 10240KB are provided as editable shortcuts for common platforms, but you must verify actual acceptance limits with your specific destination.
- A target may be unreachable within the available attempts. The result reports whether it met the limit and remains available to download when it misses. Input files are limited to 30MB.
Questions about compressing a GIF
Can I enter a limit that is not a preset?
Yes. The target field accepts 1 to 30,720 KB. Each KB here means 1,024 bytes. Use the actual byte limit given by your destination; preset labels do not verify its current rules.
Why did my GIF barely get smaller?
Visually busy files with high motion, gradients, or photographic detail have less room to shrink without severe banding. If your GIF is already heavily optimized, further compression rarely finds more to cut.
What should I check in the animation preview?
Watch gradients, small lettering and moving edges. Reducing the palette can cause banding; smaller dimensions can hide detail. Dropped frames can change motion and timing, so play the result before downloading.
Can I compress multiple GIFs at once?
