Mechanism

How the words to pages conversion works

Enter a word count or paste text to compare five estimates: 500 words per page for single-spaced 12pt, 250 for double-spaced 12pt, 375 for 1.5-spaced, 250 for paperback, and 275 for the academic preset. These are working assumptions, not official formatting standards. The custom controls offer Times New Roman, Calibri, Arial or Verdana; sizes 10, 11, 12 or 14pt; and single, 1.5 or double spacing. A formula adjusts a 500-words-per-page baseline using fixed font and spacing factors. It does not lay out the text or measure glyphs. Each estimated page count is rounded up to one decimal place. For a submission, check the actual page count in your document editor.

Limits

Why the words to pages count is an estimate

  • The custom-mode font comparison uses typical relative character widths for these four fonts at the same point size, not a measurement of the actual rendered glyphs. A different font not in the list, different margins, or different paragraph spacing will still shift the real page count.
  • Headings, block quotes, images, and tables all take space without adding proportional words. A manuscript with many of these will run longer than the estimate.
  • Paperback page counts vary by trim size. The 250-words-per-page figure is a trade paperback average, not a fixed fact.
  • Word processors count words differently from this tool. Most editors include footnotes, headers, and captions in the total word count; this tool counts only the text you paste into the input.
  • Languages with longer average word length, like German or Finnish, produce fewer words per page than English at the same font size. The estimates here assume English text.
Questions

Words to pages conversion questions

How many pages is 1,000 words?

About 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced, assuming a 12-point serif font with one-inch margins on US Letter paper. Using a 275 words-per-page baseline, the count is closer to 3.7 pages.

How many pages is 5,000 words?

About 10 pages single-spaced or 20 pages double-spaced. Using a 275 words-per-page benchmark, it runs about 18.2 pages. In a trade paperback, 5,000 words fills about 20 pages — roughly the length of a long magazine feature.

Why does the paperback number match double-spaced?

A trade paperback page holds roughly 250 words — the same as a double-spaced manuscript page. The similarity is a coincidence of trim size and font choices, not a rule. Different paperback formats have distinct trim sizes and margins, meaning the actual words per page will vary based on layout choices.

How many words is one page?

This tool uses 500 words per page for the single-spaced preset, 250 for double-spaced and 375 for 1.5-spaced. Actual capacity depends on the font, margins, headings and paragraph layout. Use the document editor to confirm the final pagination.

How many pages is a 10,000-word dissertation chapter?

About 40 pages using a 250 words-per-page double-spaced preset, or roughly 36.4 pages using a 275 words-per-page assumption. The reference list, tables, and figures add pages without adding proportional words, so the final document is usually longer than the word count alone suggests.

Why do different word-to-page converters give different numbers?

Because they assume different fonts, margins, and line spacing. A converter that assumes 11-point Calibri on A4 paper will give a different page count from one that assumes 12-point Times New Roman on US Letter. There is no single correct answer — the right one depends on your actual document settings. This tool uses the most common publishing and academic defaults, plus a custom mode where you pick the font, size, and spacing yourself.

My assignment says '12pt Arial, double-spaced' — how do I estimate that page count?

Use the custom controls above the results: set font to Arial, size to 12, and spacing to double, and the page count below updates for that specific combination instead of the presets. Arial is a wider font than Times New Roman, so it fits fewer words per page at the same size — expect a slightly higher page count than the double-spaced 12pt preset.
